At the heart of Ai Weiwei's work lies a profound examination of institutions and regimes, where he measures the human condition against economic, political, and social forces. A recurring motif in his art is the middle finger, famously seen in his photographic series Study of Perspective (1995–2003). In these striking images, Ai Weiwei is captured extending his middle finger before iconic global landmarks, a gesture that serves as a universal and concise declaration of political dissent and a rejection of any form of oppression that infringes upon human freedom.

This powerful gesture has been transformed into an equally iconic Murano glass sculpture, resulting in an object that is both impactful and elegant. Murano glass, celebrated for its centuries of craftsmanship and artistic excellence, carries historical weight, embodying both fragility and resilience. These qualities resonate deeply with Ai Weiwei's continuous exploration of freedom and resistance. The delicate yet bold nature of the Murano glass heightens the tension between defiance and vulnerability in the 2020 sculpture, Study of Perspective in Glass. This choice of material, simultaneously ancient and contemporary, reinforces the artist's vision. The sculpture, cast from Ai Weiwei's own hand, masterfully conveys the profound message of Study of Perspective while embracing the inherent lightness and ethereal qualities of glass, creating a uniquely beautiful effect.
