Sebastiaan Knot is a contemporary Dutch artist known for creating luminous abstract artworks that explore the relationship between light, color, geometry, and spatial perception. Working at the intersection of abstract photography, geometric abstraction, and sculptural wall art, Knot transforms simple forms into immersive visual experiences through layered acrylic structures, chromatic gradients, and precisely controlled light. Inspired by the Light and Space movement and Optical Art, his works blur the boundaries between photography, sculpture, and contemporary abstraction.
Sebastiaan Knot (b. 1970, Groningen, The Netherlands) is a contemporary Dutch artist based in Rotterdam whose work explores the interaction between light, color, geometry, and spatial perception.
Recognized for his luminous abstract artworks, Knot works at the intersection of abstract photography, geometric abstraction, and sculptural wall art, creating immersive experiences that challenge conventional ways of seeing.
With more than two decades of experience in photography, graphic design, and visual communication, Knot gradually shifted his focus toward fine art. Inspired by the Light and Space movement, Optical Art, and artists such as James Turrell and Victor Vasarely, he developed a unique practice in which light itself becomes both medium and subject.
Working in his Rotterdam studio, Knot carefully constructs simple forms illuminated by colored light. Through photography, UV printing, transparent layering, and the manipulation of acrylic structures, he creates non-representational compositions characterized by chromatic gradients, optical effects, and architectural depth. These works transcend traditional photography, existing somewhere between image, object, and sculpture.
His geometric abstractions create subtle perceptual shifts that change with the viewer's position and surrounding environment. By using light as material rather than simply illumination, Knot produces luminous artworks that invite contemplation and emphasize the fluid nature of perception.
Sebastiaan Knot has exhibited internationally, including at Fondation Vasarely in France, and has participated in major art fairs including EXPO Chicago, Art Miami, Zona Maco, and MIA Photo Fair. His work is included in public and private collections and has been featured in Aesthetica Magazine and numerous international publications.
Today, Knot is recognized for his distinctive contribution to contemporary abstract art, abstract photography, and the exploration of light as a sculptural medium.
