Francisco Valverde is a contemporary Mexican abstract artist known for his large-scale pigmented resin paintings. His vibrant, sculptural artworks combine color, texture, movement, and geometric abstraction, making him one of the most sought-after contemporary Latin American artists working today.
Francisco Valverde is a contemporary Mexican artist internationally recognized for his vibrant abstract resin paintings, sculptural surfaces, and innovative use of pigmented resin. Born and raised in Cuernavaca, Mexico, to a Cuban father and Mexican mother, Valverde first gained recognition through contemporary figurative painting before developing his distinctive language of contemporary abstract art.
While teaching traditional painting techniques and large-format painting at the Centro Morelense de las Artes, Valverde became inspired by his students’ pursuit of individual expression. This experience led him to embark on his own artistic exploration, ultimately transforming his practice and establishing him as one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Mexican abstraction.
Working on large-scale canvases, Valverde abandoned traditional brushes in favor of bottle dispensers filled with colorful synthetic materials and pigmented resin. Through this unconventional process, he sought to reinvent the fundamental element of drawing and painting: the line. The resulting compositions are built from rhythmic, flowing structures that create movement, texture, depth, and visual complexity. These layered resin paintings blur the boundaries between painting and sculpture, producing luminous surfaces that shift with changing light and perspective.
Valverde’s contemporary abstract paintings are characterized by dynamic lines, geometric abstraction, chromatic intensity, and sculptural depth. Through the accumulation of translucent layers, he creates immersive works that explore color, movement, spatial relationships, and the expressive potential of resin as a medium. His compositions evoke both meticulous control and spontaneous freedom, reflecting what the artist describes as the balance between obsession and experimentation.
The smooth, polished finishes of his resin artworks often recall childhood memories of brightly colored candies found at local fairs in Mexico. At the same time, their dimensional surfaces and optical effects position Valverde’s work within a broader dialogue surrounding contemporary abstract painting, color field traditions, and sculptural wall art.
Passionate about public and urban art, Valverde has participated in numerous large-scale projects, including The Street Is Yours initiative in the State of Mexico and an urban intervention presented during SMART Art Festival in San Miguel de Allende. In 2020, the Fort Wayne Museum of Art presented a solo exhibition of his work, further solidifying his reputation among collectors of contemporary Latin American art.
Francisco Valverde earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. Today, his collectible abstract resin paintings can be found in private and public collections internationally, attracting collectors seeking contemporary Mexican art, large-scale abstract paintings, and museum-exhibited artists working at the intersection of color, texture, movement, and sculptural abstraction.
