Spectral Flashbacks is a continuation of BREAKFAST's Flashbacks series, which he first introduced during Miami Art Week in 2023. These works are an exploration of memory—of how individuals exist in time and are seen by the systems around them.
Each piece captures the people who interact with it, recording their presence and then replaying those moments at intervals chosen by the collector—1, 5, 10, 30, or 60 minutes. It becomes a kind of living memory, where the artwork “flashes back” to show who it has seen. Over time, it builds a history—both personal and shared.
The medium is one BREAKFAST has been developing since 2011: a kinetic system built from thousands of small flip-discs. Each disc is printed with custom imagery he creates and is driven by electromagnets and software his team and he have engineered. As the discs flip between sides, they form portraits in motion—moments held and released again and again.
This series marks the first time BREAKFAST is offering smaller-format pieces—something many collectors have asked for over the years. While more compact, these works are made with the same level of precision, interactivity, and conceptual depth as his larger installations.
