Javier Pelaez Mexican, b. 1976

Javier Peláez Gómez lives and works in Mexico City. He is a visual artist primarily focused
on painting.

 

He studied Architecture at Universidad La Salle in Mexico City.
For over twenty years he has built a significant career as a visual artist, both in Mexico and
internationally.

 

His work centers on painting, developing a language rooted in hyperrealism, in which he explores the limits between illusion, materiality, and the
perception of reality.


In 2025, he was awarded the Acquisition Prize at the XX Rufino Tamayo Painting Biennial,
one of the most prestigious institutional recognitions in Mexico.


He has undertaken residencies at Casa Wabi (Oaxaca, Mexico), Casa NaNo (Tokyo,
Japan), and Vermont Studio Center (Vermont, USA), and has participated in major art fairs
including Untitled Miami (USA), Art Miami (USA), Dallas Art Fair (USA), Zona Maco
(Mexico), and Material Art Fair (Mexico).


Peláez has exhibited widely in galleries and museums both nationally and internationally,
including Museo Rufino Tamayo (Mexico City, Mexico), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de
Oaxaca (Oaxaca, Mexico), Museo de Arte de Sonora (MUSAS) (Sonora, Mexico), Museo
de San Ildefonso (Mexico City, Mexico), and Museo de la Cancillería (Mexico City,
Mexico), as well as venues such as Saenger Galería (Mexico City, Mexico), William Turner
Gallery (Los Angeles, USA), Enlace Gallery (Lima, Peru), George Mason University
(Virginia, USA), and the Mexican Embassy in Berlin (Berlin, Germany).


His work is part of important public and private collections, including the Fundación Casa
Wabi Collection, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo y de las Culturas Oaxaqueñas, Museo de
Arte de Sonora (MUSAS), Museo de la Cancillería Collection, Secretaría de Hacienda y
Crédito Público de México Collection, Gaspar Collection, Ugarit Collection, Bulltick Bank
Collection, Jaka Collection, Pinto Mazal Collection, and S+A Collection.


He has also been featured in publications such as Art in America, Art News, LA Times,
and Visual Art Source.

Peláez was included in the book Pintura: México Vol. I.

His first monograph, Javier Peláez: High Performance, was published in 2020.
