This drawing explores Alec DeMarco’s interpretation of fire as a powerful elemental force, drawing inspiration from his extensive training in the traditional Japanese art of Irezumi. The work reflects a formative period in DeMarco’s artistic development, when he spent nearly three years apprenticing under a Japanese tattoo master, studying the techniques, symbolism, and visual principles that define this centuries-old artistic tradition.

During the early stages of his apprenticeship, DeMarco concentrated on mastering the representation of four fundamental elements—Wind, Earth, Water, and Fire. Each element required an understanding of its distinctive forms, movements, and expressive qualities, establishing a foundation that would continue to influence his artistic vocabulary long after his training.

In this composition, DeMarco revisits the Fire or Flame element, translating the dynamic energy and fluid movement of flames into his own contemporary abstract language. Rather than reproducing traditional Japanese imagery, he reinterprets the principles learned during his apprenticeship, allowing instinctive gestures and expressive forms to convey the intensity, movement, and transformative nature of fire.

The resulting work reflects the ongoing dialogue between discipline and spontaneity that characterizes DeMarco’s practice. Rooted in the precision and traditions of Japanese tattooing yet liberated through abstraction, the drawing transforms a fundamental exercise from his early artistic education into a personal exploration of energy, movement, and visual expression.
