This work draws inspiration from Alec DeMarco’s time living and working in the Yucatán region of Mexico, where the intersection of ancient civilizations, contemporary architecture, and tropical landscapes left a lasting impression on his artistic imagination. Through a combination of personal memories and cultural references, DeMarco transforms elements of his surroundings into a layered, abstract composition.

In the lower right, a head-like form references the monumental stone sculptures of the Olmec civilization, one of the earliest major cultures of ancient Mesoamerica. This historical influence is integrated into a broader visual landscape, where abstracted architectural forms evoke the tall buildings of the Mexican cityscape, while organic shapes suggest the dense jungle that surrounds it.

The upper left of the composition features an archway inspired by the villa DeMarco rented during his stay. Situated in the middle of the jungle, the property was distinguished by a series of striking arches surrounding its outdoor patio. These architectural details became a recurring visual memory, finding their way into the artist’s drawings.

From the open archway, abstract forms appear to spill outward, dissolving the boundaries between architecture, vegetation, and imagination. The composition becomes a personal interpretation of place rather than a literal representation, bringing together the ancient and the contemporary, the constructed and the natural. Through this interplay, DeMarco captures not only the physical characteristics of the Yucatán but also the impressions and experiences that continue to shape his visual language.
