Drawing lies at the foundation of Alec DeMarco’s practice. He draws constantly, recording what he sees, thinks, and experiences through sketches, notes, doodles, color experiments, and spontaneous marks. Even the smallest scribble can contain the seed of a future painting.

DeMarco preserves these fragments in notebooks, building an evolving archive of ideas and observations. Over time, individual drawings accumulate until they begin to form something new. Rather than remaining preparatory studies, they are brought together as collages that become works in their own right—dense compilations of images, thoughts, colors, and gestures gathered across different moments.

These works offer perhaps the most direct view into DeMarco’s creative process. If his paintings transform individual ideas into fully realized compositions, the collages reveal the abundance of material that exists before that transformation takes place. They function almost like maps of the artist’s mind: layered, fragmented, instinctive, and constantly in motion.
