The title of this painting references Ray Gun magazine, the influential publication associated with graphic designer David Carson, whose experimental approach to typography and design has long inspired Alec DeMarco. While studying design in Southern California, DeMarco encountered this visual language through a professor with a shared appreciation for punk rock, drawn to the magazine’s raw energy, unconventional layouts, and refusal to follow traditional design rules.

The painting itself developed with a similar sense of freedom. Rather than beginning with a predetermined narrative, DeMarco allowed individual forms and references to enter the composition intuitively. At middle left, an abstract face combines teeth with a deer antler—a reference to his father, an avid hunter. Hunting, however, was never part of DeMarco’s own identity; despite growing up around it, he felt too sensitive toward animals to participate.

Abstract leaves and vegetation near the bottom recall his childhood in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, while a spray-paint can appears on the right. Its inclusion was spontaneous—a can happened to be sitting on the table while he worked—but it also connects to an important early visual influence. Graffiti and spray-painted imagery were among the first forms of art DeMarco remembers encountering, and their immediacy and energy have remained close to his visual vocabulary even though he never practiced graffiti himself.

Ultimately, the work is an exercise in free association. Personal references surface throughout, but they are not intended to construct a fixed narrative. Like the graphic design that inspired its title, the painting values instinct, disruption, and visual impact over explanation—a collection of familiar fragments assembled simply because, to Alec DeMarco, they looked right.
