Drawing is an essential foundation of Alec DeMarco’s artistic practice, with nearly every painting originating from an individual sketch or a combination of drawings developed over time. His sketchbooks serve as an ongoing visual archive, preserving everything from spontaneous doodles and experimental marks to handwritten notes and even everyday grocery lists. For DeMarco, no fragment is too insignificant to become part of a larger composition.
Rather than following a predetermined structure, the artist approaches these works through an intuitive process of selection and arrangement. Each drawing is placed in response to the one before it, allowing its forms, gestures, and emotional resonance to guide the next decision. The composition gradually takes shape through this continuous dialogue between individual fragments.
The resulting work becomes more than a collection of sketches. It offers a glimpse into DeMarco’s creative thinking, where ordinary observations, fleeting ideas, and seemingly unrelated images come together to form a cohesive yet spontaneous visual language. What begins as an accumulation of everyday thoughts is transformed into a layered expression of memory, instinct, and artistic exploration.
