Surveillance has always been a central axis in Ai Weiwei’s work—a reflection on personal experience and the way authority hides behind the promise of security. With To Be Looked At…, Weiwei flips the camera back on the viewer. Cut from solid aluminum, this multi-directional bank of pseudo-CCTV cameras can be wall-mounted or displayed on a surface. It carries his signature dry humor: installed inside private homes, the sculpture turns art collectors into the subjects of an inescapable, modern gaze.
